Name confusion: The name "Russian River" is actually the name of the river which runs from Lake Mendocino to the Pacific Ocean. "Guerneville" is the name of one of the many towns dotting the banks of the river. When looking on maps or doing a web search what you really want to look for is "Guerneville" which is the proper name for the gay resort town. However, when gays in San Francisco want to get away for the weekend they always say "Let's go to Russian River" and never "Let's go to Guerneville." It is "common knowledge" among gays that the two names are synonymous.

Overview: Russian River is to San Francisco what Palm Springs is to Los Angeles. It is a weekend getaway. About a 90 minute drive from the city it is a forested and woodsy retreat that hugs the contours of a river. The main town of Guerneville has a hippie "live and let live" feel to it. The high season is in the summer and it can be quite slow during the winter. Things are fairly spread out and the main business district is quite compact and down-scale. Don't expect upscale restaurants and shops like other tony gay retreats. This is more country and campsites. Only "The Woods" resort advertises itself as "mostly men." All the other hotels listed below are mixed "gay & lesbian" or "gay--friendly & straight."
